The Saranac Lake Board of Trustees holds a public hearing on September 28, 2026, to discuss a proposed 12-month freeze on new short-term rental permits.
The Saranac Lake Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing Monday, Sept. 28, on a proposed local law that would put a 12-month moratorium on new short-term rental applications in the village.
The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Village Board room at 39 Main Street and can also be joined on Zoom. The hearing is the first item after roll call.
The draft "Moratorium Law of 2026" would stop the village from accepting or acting on new, initial applications to operate short-term rentals, including both special use permits and STR permits, for 12 months after the law takes effect. Applications already under review by the Development Board would not be affected, and pre-existing STRs would not be subject to the moratorium.
According to the draft, the pause is meant to give the village time to collect data, evaluate how its STR rules are working, and propose further amendments. The village first added STR regulations to its Development Code in 2023 and amended them in 2025. The law would take effect once filed with the New York Secretary of State.
Trustees voted 4-0 on Sept. 14 to schedule the hearing, with Trustee Trudeau absent.
The agenda also lists appointment of an SLLDC director; promotions to heavy equipment operator and police sergeant; hiring of a code enforcement official; an appendix to the Teamsters Local 687 agreement; a professional services agreement with SDA; 2026-27 Mt. Pisgah ski pass rates; an amendment to the Hot House lease; and a surplus equipment sale.
