The Town of Tupper Lake has canceled the annual Field Day for 2026. Resources are shifting to a massive community celebration for America's 250th birthday.
Tupper Lake Field Day — the annual summer tradition featuring a parade, sack races, tug-of-war, food trucks, live music, a slime run, and this year's theme of Christmas in July — won't happen in 2026.
The Town of Tupper Lake Recreation Department announced the cancellation this week, citing limited labor resources, financial constraints, and organizational capacity. The decision, the department said, "was not made lightly."
The energy is going somewhere, though. Rather than Field Day, the Recreation Department is pivoting to the Fourth of July — and going bigger than usual. The Town is partnering with the Village of Tupper Lake and Tupper Arts to create a community-wide celebration of America's 250th birthday. The existing Fourth of July festivities at Flanders Park and the Bandshell — vendors, food, live music, and fireworks — will be joined by a community parade organized by the Town that morning.
For vendors and families who had the summer Field Day circled on their calendars, it's a real loss. Field Day has drawn people to Tupper Lake for the parade float contest, the games, chainsaw carving demonstrations, face painting, and the slime run — the kind of mid-summer event that fills downtown and gives the season a focal point.
The bet the Recreation Department is making is that combining resources produces something worth the tradeoff: a bigger Fourth of July instead of two separate events stretched across a lean summer.
Details on the parade, entertainment, vendors, and activities will be announced by each organizing group as plans are finalized. July 4th at Flanders Park and the Bandshell.
